Double-doubles from A'ja Wilson and Brittney Griner powered the U.S. to an 81-72 win against Nigeria on Tuesday in their women's basketball opener at the Tokyo Olympics.
It was the 50th consecutive victory in Olympic competition for Team USA dating back to the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona.
Wilson contributed 19 points and 13 rebounds and Griner posted 13 points and 10 boards for the American squad, which used a 23-0 run in the second quarter to build a 44-32 halftime lead. Diana Taurasi, appearing in her record 33rd Olympic game, added 10 points and Sue Bird dished out 13 assists.
Ezinne Kalu led four Nigerians in double figures with 16 points. Nigeria used a 12-0 surge to get within 75-67 with 3:20 remaining, but the U.S. scored the next six points to quash the threat.
Up next for Team USA in Group B is host Japan (1-0), which defeated France (0-1) 74-70. Tipoff for Friday's game is at 12:40 a.m. ET.
