BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW YORK -- Global confirmed COVID-19 cases topped 6 million on Saturday, reaching 6,003,762 as of 4:32 p.m. (2032 GMT), according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

PARIS -- France on Saturday recorded 57 new COVID-19 deaths, taking the tally to 28,771, while fewer hospitalized patients were registered for the seventh week in a row.

In a statement, the country's Health Ministry said the human loss caused by the disease rose by 0.3 percent in hospitals to 18,444, while that of nursing homes and other medico-social establishments would be updated on June 2.

JERUSALEM -- The Israeli Ministry of Health reported 25 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, bringing the total to 17,012.

This is a significant decrease in the number of daily cases, after five consecutive days in which an increase was recorded, including 115 new cases reported on Friday.

NEW YORK -- China's economy is expected to rebound in the second quarter following the country's effective efforts to contain the novel coronavirus, a J.P. Morgan economist has said.

Analysts at J.P. Morgan forecast the global economy will suffer a deep downturn in the first half of the year as the COVID-19 pandemic engulfed the world, followed by a quick, very strong yet partial recovery, said Bruce Kasman, chief economist and head of global economic research at J.P. Morgan.

ROME -- A further 111 COVID-19 patients had died in the past 24 hours in Italy, bringing the country's death toll to 33,340, out of total infection cases of 232,664, according to fresh figures on Saturday.

Nationwide, the number of active infections dropped by 2,484 to 43,691, according to the Civil Protection Department.
