British PM expecting backbench dissention

France News.Net
Sunday 5th July, 2009

UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has been told by his backbench to expect a revolt over his 2007 decision to scrap the 10p bottom rate of income tax.

A group of Labour MPs, supported by Tory and Liberal Democrat members have threatened to block this year's entire Budget in a vote in the Commons on Tuesday.

The labour MP’s have complained to their leader that millions of people on low incomes have been rendered worse off since the change, which was brought in alongside a reduction in the basic rate of tax from 22% to 20%.
