Sahara pipeline to start in Nigeria

France News.Net
Sunday 5th July, 2009

African countries, Nigeria, Niger and Algeria have signed an agreement to allow a multi-billion dollar pipeline across their lands.

Nigerian gas will be sent across the Sahara to the Mediterranean in a giant project that will cost an estimated US$13 billion.

The pipeline will run for 4,128 kilometres through the three countries and will dwarf several existing pipelines, such as the one beneath the North Sea.

European Union countries have welcomed the pipeline, saying they will now be able to diversify their gas supplies and reduce their reliance upon Russian gas.
