Tropical Storm Gustav sweeps Caribbean
France News.Net Thursday 28th August, 2008
The death toll in Haiti from tropical storm Gustav has risen to 14.
The storm, which later raged through the Dominican Republic, killed another eight people in an avalanche of mud caused by the heavy rains.
Gustav is now travelling in a northwesterly direction to the Gulf of Mexico at a speed of eight kilometres an hour.
It is feared Gustav could regain hurricane strength and pose a threat to the oil rigs in the Gulf.
Oil prices rose after Shell announced that it was beginning a partial evacuation of its oil platforms.
Residents along the coast of Louisiana are preparing for a possible arrival of the storm.
There is a chance Gustav could hit New Orleans.
